IELTS tests a candidate for the 4 requisite skills in a language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Even though many candidates do well in the reading, writing and listening sections, they fail to impress in the speaking test. This too after availing IELTS speaking test coaching classes. The reasons for this is evident, the speaking skill requires prompt comprehension, thinking, formulation of thoughts into sentences, correct use of vocabulary, fluency and coherence. Phew! That’s a long checklist. To top it, sitting face to face with the examiner and expressing yourself requires grit and confidence.

Speaking Test Format

Duration: 11–14 minutes

Your IELTS preparation classes being online or offline will inform you that the speaking section assesses your use of spoken English in 3 parts. Every test is recorded.

• Part 1

You will be asked general questions about yourself to make you comfortable. It will cover a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.

• Part 2

After easing you into the test, you will be given a card which will ask you to convey your thoughts about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.

• Part 3

You will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test can last between four to five minutes.

Criteria for Evaluation

Your IELTS training in speaking the language is assessed by certified IELTS trainers. They will test you on the basis of:

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Pronunciation

How do I achieve a High Band Ielts speaking test?

Work on Vocab

Develop a habit of carrying a pocket-sized diary along with you. Whenever you hear or read a new word, write it down and look up its meaning. You can also use your smartphone and maintain a list of words on it. Write the synonyms for the new words. This way you will remember to replace your regularly used words with the new ones you have written while speaking.

Listen to words

Keep watching English language videos, English news and movies. In this manner, you will build up your pronunciation and realise how to work on your intonation. You will realise the variation in tones: while asking a question, expressing delight, being disappointed and so on. Intonation holds value as it conveys your emotions and intentions.

Don’t stop reading

And what better way to master a language than to read it. Constant reading of magazines, blogs, newspapers and books can lead to a better understanding of the language. In fact, practice reading out loud. This will give you a fair idea about your pronunciation.

Practice and Practice

Don’t shy away from having conversations in English with anyone and everyone around you. In your IELTS training course, do not let go of any opportunity to speak. Leave aside the embarrassment of making mistakes as that is the only way to learn a skill. Test yourself and record yourself on your smartphone. This will support your growth.

Don’t hurry

You are given enough time to think before speaking during the test. Utilise that time well and speak convincingly. Hurrying through your test will lead to fumbling and mistakes which will affect your confidence. Express your thoughts well as cutting them short will make the examiner feel you lack clear thinking.

Be Confident

Greet warmly, smile genuinely. This mantra will leave a good impression and give you an extra edge. Do not fear making mistakes and do not panic. Continue speaking at the right pace. This assures the examiner that you are committed to doing well in your interview.

Express Passionately

Mugging up answers never help, as that will lead to a neutral tone and repetitive thoughts, and the examiners have heard enough of those! They want to hear your views, listen to you contradict and perceive your beliefs. So be original. ‘Speaking from the heart ‘ will assist your intonation too and impress the interviewer.
