Read Out Loud

Silent reading is less effective compared to reading out loud. You focus more when you are speaking. It leads to better retention. You make connections better between concepts and the topics in such a manner.

Teach what you learn

Yup. When you are trying to tutor someone, you attempt to explain the topic in the simplest way possible. This allows you to figure out how well you have learnt the concept. If you aren’t able to get through to someone, then you know you have to go back to the concept and understand it again. Also, it boosts your confidence regarding your studies.

Work out

Studies have confirmed that a bit of physical exercise boosts cognitive abilities. It reduces stress levels and increases your memory performance. Movement increases the blood flow and oxygen levels. This helps the brain. So those physical training classes in school have a reason behind them.

Don’t ignore sleep

Many of us do all-nighters before an important test or exam. That might give us more time to study but it is a myth that it will help. If you ask me, what’s my top study tip for students then it has to be “sleep well”. Your brain and body require sleep to kick start itself. You will be in a better condition to think logically and answer in an alert state than being in a groggy, grumpy condition which will result in your goofing up your exam.

Organize your learning

Sure your mother screams at you to be organized and you procrastinate. But that can be a useful habit when it comes to studying. Just counting chapters will only make you fret more. Make lists, highlight the topics you want to concentrate on, arrange the sequence of concepts and stick to a schedule. It works wonders.

Study Hacks

Go Mnemonic

You can use it in any way possible. Devise your own devices to help learn better. Mnemonics work by associating easy-to-remember clues with complex or unfamiliar data.

Like, OIL RIG, which helps chemistry students remember the difference between these two terms: Oxidation It Loses (electrons) Reduction It Gains (electrons)

Mnemonics definitely make learning fun.

Make Mind Maps

Everyone is talking about how much they help, so give it a try. It is an effective way to learn comprehensive associations. Draw one for a principal you are finding tough to learn. Add its characteristics and examples. Chart it out in a way you can visualize. This aids quick learning and the visual representation is easy to retain for a long time.

Write it down

Be old school. Write down what you learn. It helps. Put down your revision work on paper. Make notes.  It ingrains the information in a better manner. More senses are utilized and worked with when you do that. You needn’t copy the whole chapter. Jot down the main points or features. Better still, make flashcards and cheat sheets!

Meditate

You read that right! In our culture, there is a lot of literature about meditation and why it is beneficial for us. Sure, spiritual enlightenment might not be your goal but a 15 minutes meditation will help tremendously. Researchers at Columbia University Medical Centre claim that it can change the structure and function of the brain through relaxation and increase focus and learning concentration, improving memory and attention span. It also reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.

Cut out distractions

Put your phone on silent mode. Find your secluded corner and do not check Netflix. Making an effort to not allowing yourself to get distracted, makes you concentrate more and sets the rhythm for your study. Once you get into this groove, it will be easier for you to isolate yourself from all that can bother you.

Listening to soothing music

Playing instrumental music or any other type that relaxes your brain at a low volume has shown remarkable results. It reduces the stress that may creep up while studying. It increases memory and brain stimulation. Of course, you will find that chapter easier to comprehend when your mood is better right!
