Past continuous use for an ongoing action that was happening in the past was always structured by combining the past tense of the verbs be was and war with the present participle form of the main “ verb- ing”. It always conveyed that the action doer was specifically in the past.

For example

  • David was studying when Mia came.

In this sentence, you can find the action of studying in the past that got disrupted when Mia came.


past continuous tense provides past action going on while another event was taking place, for example, he was watching TV while he was studying in the room. Here you can find simultaneous action, which describes two activities at the same time in the past.

They were studying, enjoying themselves, and eating while group studying.

The construction of the past continuous tense is as follows:

Positive form 

Sub + was/were + verb + ing

For example,

  • He was studying for an exam.
  • They were eating.
  • She was playing cricket.

Negative Form

Sub + was/were + not + verb + ing

  • He was not studying.
  • They were not eating.
  • She was not playing cricket.

Question form 

Was/were + sub + verb + ing?

  • Was he studying?
  • Were they eating?
  • Was she playing cricket?

While using the first continuous tense, you are required to use the helping verb “to be “ and was / were to structure your sentence correctly. These phrases add additional meaning to the sentence.

For example

  • She was not ready yet.
  • He was about to leave.

There are other models of helping verbs as well, like can, could, may, might, shall, should, and would. These can be used to provide better clarity about the sentence.

For example

  • The window glass was broken.
  • The monument was being built.

Here there are no specific details about the subject, but details about the action taken by the subject.

Differences between past continuous and another tense

There is a difference between past continuous and simple tense. Past continuous highlights action in the past. For example, he was playing for three hours. On the other hand, past simple reflecting actions that happened at a specific time do not recognize the duration; for example, he played for two hours.

Temporal focus.

Past continuous specifies the particular time in the past when action was taking place.

 For example.

  • He was playing in the park. At 5 pm. 

Past simply specifies the time in the past when an action took place.

Sequence of action

Past continuous:  emphasises actions simultaneously with each other.

For example,

  • While he was enjoying himself, she was singing.

Past perfect: it established an order that happened first.
